You are what you eat
by Berek on 02/16/2009

"You are what you eat" is an old saying most of us have heard, likely from our mothers when we are caught digging into frosted candy treats. While I have yet to develop frosted skin or pie filling hair, the saying is really true of the anatomy for a person. We are who we are not because of ourselves but because of things around us, and that includes the interactions we have with other people.

When I look at a game community I don't just see forum members A and B, nicknames, avatars, post counts and prestigious titles, but a collection of ideas and concepts from all over from players that are discussing and collaborating via a social framework that goes above and beyond that framework itself. A guild for example is not just a collection of characters in a game or a roster of names on a website, but a breathing entity that helps to shape the game and community it is a part of.

We all have a significant impact on each other, regardless of status or how small we think our community voice might be to others. For instance, there was recently a forum post by a new community member interested in Alganon. They posted a question of how often we get a chance to actually view posts such as theirs, and if we respond to questions and concerns someone in the community might have about the development of Alganon. I can state emphatically that we see these and respond every chance we get.

The Alganon community is still relatively new, which is exciting because it has a lot of potential for development in the direction we all want to see it grow. That potential can only be had if the road we are on is a two way street. Has anyone ever heard of a one-way highway from one major city to another? There is a reason they call highways the arteries of civilization, and arteries of the body a circulatory system. Information passes both ways for the betterment of the whole.

What excites me most about community development is giving everyone a chance to voice their opinions. We are one community and can only make a true difference in the development of Alganon through that common voice. Some developers seem to forget why they exist in the first place; their communities. In speaking with every developer at QOL since coming on-board, I haven't sensed one reservation about building this game exclusively for the community and not for some other mysterious reason.

I am excited to show you what Alganon is about and what it has to offer in not just community development, but in the fun factor too. The Developer Blogs, Community Roundtables, Creature Features and the recent video are just the beginning. To aid in our community development efforts, stay tuned in the next few days for an exciting announcement that will bring a large part of what we are developing, right to your fingertips.

I've been here for a few hours and you guys seem like a awesome developer studio.

So many times have we seen the same thing over and over. The MMO community is filled with a vast knowledge of people from many different places and they all have great ideas.

I read a forum post on here just earlier that was a fantastic idea. I mean fantastic. Yet for some reason no one has ever tried implementing a system like the poster had suggested.

Why? who knows probably some mysterious reason. Maybe it's easier to just make a carbon copy of every other game and hope you make it rich by chance.

But so far from QoL I have seen nothing but great ideas. Maybe it takes a fresh face to change an old perspective. That's what I hope happens here. Best of luck to you guys!
