Hey all
Now I heard that one of the lead guys for Alganon actually had a lot to do with the development of Horizons. Now I know Horizons has copped a lot of abuse over the years and some of that is justified but Horizons also had a lot of good points going for it which I am yet to see in any subsequent MMOs to date.
For example....unlocking the races of Dryads and Satyrs. This wasn't just wandering down to your local video game store and buying an expansion. To unlock these races the entire shard pitched in and help gather resources and build the rainbow bridge to free the dryads....I am not sure how the Satyrs were freed as I didnt take part in it. But this kind of event really brought the community together.
Another feature I liked about Horizons was the classes. You didn't just pick a single class and was stuck with it throughout the game. You could pick up ANY other class in game (provided you met the pre-requisites of course) and could switch back and forth between them. My main character was a Reaver. He was basically a sword wielding tough guy with some dark magic (can't remember the exact spell list...I think there was Siphon and I know Etheral Blade rocked). But this was a little limiting so I took priest to lvl 20 and got the ability to have some minor heals when I was a Reaver as well as the Rez ability....Still not quite satisfied....I took mage to get fireball so I had a nice drawing spell and also took Shaman for their root spells. This rounded me out well...I would draw a mob with a fireball and then hit him hard with my sword....when my health was running low I would root them...step back and heal and then get back into the action....good times.
Another thing I enjoyed was when they unleashed some virus onto the shard. Basically this virus was contagious and you caught it by standing next to someone who had it. It gave you a negative to your attributes or something. Anyhow as a shard we had to work out the cure and then help each other complete the necessary steps to get cured...once cured you were immune.
Last but certainly not least of the things I enjoyed were random "attacks" on towns by mobs. You would be out adventuring when everyone would start yelling to get to a certain town as it was being attacked....you would get there and there would be high lvl mobs running amuck. You would do everything you could to help out....very exciting.
Now I know Alganon is not a "sequel" to Horizons and as stated earlier Horizons had many failings. But since I left Horizons back in 2005 I have not ventured into a game that has made me feel as much a part of the community as well as the actual game world as Horizons did. I am just hoping that Alganon will be able to provide me with this level of immersion and fun.

I completely agree with you Mordechai (suprise surprise :D), but my comment couldn't be cut down to 1024 chars so I felt obliged to respond in my own blog ;)
-Random town assaults by hi level groups? I like it. One of the few enjoyable things about my short time in City of Villains was the Rikti invasion stuff (early). I like that approach. I think other games have tried (Warhammer Public quests?) and i hope Alganon sees the good and the bad with these and runs with it. I don't want all the quality in instances. I want options. I hope Alganon bring sus both what we're looking for.
Thanks for the post, looking forward to more.

Hmm, interesting. I had a short stint with Horizon's when it came out, and actually had a favorable impression of it. Yet, for me, it was during my brother's MMO-less streak (he's my main group...), and I never was able to fit myself in socially. It became a solo-MMO, I got bored and left.
I currently play Vanguard, so the games that are right for me aren't always the most popular...
Ahh, just notice you play VG also. Heh...
A static trio on that game is absolutely unrivaled in terms of class depth and symbiosis. Hoping this one will be duo/trio friendly.
Well David Allen is the owner of Quest Online or rather co-owner him and his RL friend own the company. David was the original creator of horizons to my knowledge. Now there was some issues during beta and to my understanding basically a hostile Take over and David left before horizons made it out of beta.
Some of the features sound reall cool that were in horizons. Sadly they will not be in Alganon that I know of though some might make an appearence later. Anyhow I hope you enjoy the game.
